The study by Duke University researchers found that water use in the Permian had increased 767% between 2011 and 2016.

The response from  Texas Alliance of Energy Producers is:

• “If you use water to drill oil wells, and you drill more and bigger oil wells, you will use more water.”
• water use to for shale production is less than 1% of statewide water withdrawals
