What’s happening? Health and Science experts stand behind a new drilling buffer zone of a 3,200-feet — equal to roughly one kilometer or just over half a mile — that will go into effect in California in 2023.
Why is this important? The impacts of drilling disproportionally impact Black and BIPOC neighborhoods. The set back would apply to homes, schools and healthcare facilities.
How will this be important? The rules will also require emissions monitoring of existing wells within those buffer zones, because of the disproportionate impact to Latino and Black communities.
