Moving transmission lines to highways

Ceres shares an opinion piece with Governing about placing transmission lines in highway corridors. They say the prohibition of transmission lines near highways is an outdated 1950s federal policy that has been lifted.

This very issue came up during interim hearings in the Texas Legislature.

Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, and Virginia have all opened their highway rights of way up for transmission lines. Wisconsin has long permitted it. Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan are looking to do the same in 2026.
