Nuclear Power Numbers

What is happening? Nuclear Power in the U.S.:

  • makes up 20% of the nation’s electricity
  • 50% + of clean electrical power
  • > (more than) all other emission-free sources combined
  • 93 commercial reactors
  • 28 states have commercial rectors
  • 23 additional commercial reactors are in the process of decommissioning
  • 92% of the time nuclear plants are producing power, much higher than wind or solar

Why is this important? By preserving nuclear power we are benefitting clean air initiatives. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law included $6 billion for a Civil Nuclear Credit Program to support plants at the highest economic risk of closure.

How will this be important? Nuclear plants are a money saver. California is decommissioning a plant, scientists studying the issue say in 10 years it would save California $2.6 B and if it operates beyond 2045, then it could be $21 billion in savings.
