Did you know that the gross receipts tax traces back to Spain in 1342 and France in 1292? That’s according to the Tax Foundation. The gross receipts tax thrived during the Great Depression. Today 7 states, Delaware, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, have a gross receipts tax and Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia allow local governments to impose a gross receipts tax. Four states, Indiana, New Jersey, Kentucky, and Michigan, have repealed their gross receipts tax.
