Halloween Taxes. Taxing Candy.

What’s happening? How states tax candy varies greatly by rate and by the definition of candy. For instance Illinois considers Reese’s peanut butter cups, gummy worms and Hershey’s milk chocolate bars to be candy and taxes them at 6.25%. While Twix, Twizzlers and Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme bars are not classified as candy and taxed at 1%. Illinois distinguishing characteristic is whether flour is involved.

Why is this important? Let’s read the above where candy that trick or treaters receive commonly are not considered candy.

How will this be important? People who want to kill joy in the world want to tax sugar and soda and butter and probably dairy and meat until we’re all eating some form of gruel that we saw on the Matrix. So, these killjoys will try to tax the hell out Halloween.
