How Montana Taxes Cannabis

What is happening? Montana is the 12th state to adopt recreational marijuana use. In lieu of a multi tiered tax system like in California, Montana opted for a single sales tax and placed no taxes on growing or distribution.

Why is this important? Montana isn’t a sales tax fan, but they did pass a 20% sales tax on recreational marijuana and an optional additional 3% that local governments can levy.

How will this be important? The population of Montana grows by 12 million every summer during tourist season.
