Local Government Trend: Land Acknowledgements

What is happening? Local governments are adopting land acknowledgements that formally recognize that the city was built on indigenous land.

Why is this important? Land acknowledgments aren’t new and shiny- decades ago Australia, New Zealand and Canada local governments began issuing them to recognize the history of their communities.

How will this be important? It’s not just for local governments, business entities like the Macy’s Day parade have also adopted acknowledgement statements. The Native Governance Center published an online guide to indigenous land acknowledgement.
