Local Government Use of Cannabis Tax

What’s happening? Vista, California is found south of San Diego near the California coast. It has  $5.1 million in revenue from the cannabis sales tax for the last fiscal year.

Why is this important? Her’s a breakdown of how Vista will spend its $5.1 million :

• $4 M to the general fund
  • Cannabis decoy and enforcement operations: $20,000
  • Youth cannabis prevention and early intervention: $100,000
  • Youth scholarship program: $140,000
  • Increased lighting in neighborhoods: $270,000
  • Park restroom maintenance: $31,000
  • New Sheriff’s deputy: $275,000
  • Park Director Ranges (2): $277,000
• $1.1 million to spend on youth scholarships

How will this be important? Cannabis revenue is a viable way for the city to add safety elements from sheriff’s deputies to more ambulances.
