Biobased Asphalt. The Path to a Greener Road Construction Industry

The CHAPLIN (Collaboration in aspHalt Applications with LigniN) program

  • a meeting of 22 organizations comprising the entire road construction value-chain
  • works together to stimulate the development and commercialization of lignin-containing asphalt

What is lignin?

  • organic polymers that form key structural materials in plants and some algae
  • released during of paper production
  • a good substitute for fossil bitumen, a non-sustainable petroleum product

How does it work?

Adding lignin to asphalt can make it 50% greener and reduce the temperature of  production and application by 86 °F. Lingin saves around 20% CO2 and 50% of fossil fuels.
