Can Fast Fashion Survive the Demand for Sustainability

What defines Fast Fashion?

Retailers who’ve found success by quickly churning out fresh, low-priced styles that pull trend-seekers into stores.

Problems Facing Fast Fashion:

  • The clothing industry is responsible for about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions
  • Overproduction has led some brands to burn millions or even billons in unsold products

Customer Trends:

  • In 2018 U.S. shoppers spent $128.5 billion on sustainable versions of quick-selling goods
  • 48% of Americans say they’d change their consumption habits to reduce their environmental impact
  • 53% of those ages 21 through 34 would give up a brand-name product to buy environmentally friendly
  • Consumers & investors are turning to thrift & second-hand retailers

Industry Response: In 2018 Burberry destroyed $38 million in unused inventory. Investors questioned the practice. Todaythe company recycles or donates these products in addition to implementing more careful production. Other retailers are following suit.
