Canada Moving to Limit Single-Use Plastics
Legislation:
- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is working to ban single-use plastics as early as 2021.
- Vancouver is the 1st Canadian city to ban single-use foam.
- Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Labrador are planning bans.
Canadian Polling:
- 64% of consumers want to be offered the option of packaging-free products and deliveries.
- 71.2% support a ban on all single-use plastics.
- 94% are “personally motivated to reduce single-use plastic packaging”.
Corporate Examples:
- Early this year Loblaw Companies Ltd will pilot a program with TerraCycle to allow shoppers to buy items in reusable containers.
- Metro, Inc allows customers to buy meat, fish, and pastries using their own containers.
- Empire Co. Ltd. will phase out plastic bags by the end of the month.
