Secret weapon: the company’s own battery cell
Ultium battery technology developed in partnership with LG Chem will offer flexibility and scalability for a broad range of vehicles with a lower production cost.
The “pouch cells” can be stacked like bricks to provide common building blocks for multiple vehicles and allow for superior packaging density.
Less Cobalt
Current lithium ion batteries are produced with cobalt, a rare resource often from conflict zones. The Ultium battery uses 70% less cobalt than a typical battery and GM aims for zero cobalt with continued development.
