how to not talk to employees

I keep a file of “what not to do” and I’m adding this to it. A tech employer was asked by employees to justify, with data, its return to the office policy. No data was offered and instead a high ranking official in this company said that serendipity occurs when you’re in the office. I like a good John Cusack movie, just like anyone else, but relying on serendipity that occurs when a person is in an office when their work product and performance is excellent out of the office is not a justification for mandatory attendance. Guess how the workers felt? “workers feeling demoralized, distracted and undervalued.” Not an employer winning working confidence.
