Montreal: Zero Waste by 2030

Why:

  • meet UN greenhouse emissions goals
  • encourage the market to use greener products
  • encourage citizens to change their consumption habits
  • improve how the city handles waste

Individual Responsibility: Each Montreal citizen would need to reduce their waste by 20 lbs/year.

The Plan:

  • public hearings to decide appropriateness of single-use items easier
  • reuse & donation of materials
  • modernize  waste pickup
  • incrementally ban the throwing out of organic waste
  • improve composting facilities
  • reduce garbage pick-up

Cost: $8 million/year from 2020 to 2025 but the city estimates a $10 million savings in the cost or waste management
