Montreal: Zero Waste by 2030
Why:
- meet UN greenhouse emissions goals
- encourage the market to use greener products
- encourage citizens to change their consumption habits
- improve how the city handles waste
Individual Responsibility: Each Montreal citizen would need to reduce their waste by 20 lbs/year.
The Plan:
- public hearings to decide appropriateness of single-use items easier
- reuse & donation of materials
- modernize waste pickup
- incrementally ban the throwing out of organic waste
- improve composting facilities
- reduce garbage pick-up
Cost: $8 million/year from 2020 to 2025 but the city estimates a $10 million savings in the cost or waste management
