New York Tackles Diversity & Inclusion in the Construction Industry

What’s the issue?

Diversity in the construction industry is a challenge as companies fail to recruit from historically marginalized groups. Despite a labor shortage, there are few minorities & women employed in the industry.

Efforts to change

New York leads the nation at setting high impact Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) goals. During fiscal year 2018-19, MWBE state contracts reached 29.13%.

What can companies do?

  • target a workforce that represents the community in which a business operates
  • weave diversity and inclusion strategies into all parts of day-to-day practices
  • national corporations can attract candidates through corporate-led programs
