Who conducted the study?
International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA) and the UN refugee agency, UNHCR
What?
Study looked at how solar power can deliver energy for lighting, water pumps, cooking and related needs in 2 refugee camps in Ethiopia and 2 refugee camps in Iraq.
The results:
The 2 camps currently use grid light, diesel-fueled generators, wood, charcoal, or animal dung and some had power for only 4 hours a day.
The switch to solar reduces emissions, improves life in refugee camps, and cuts the current $35 million the UN spends per year on diesel fuel for generators.
