Total Sued over Carbon Emissions

The litigation:

14 local governments and a few NGOs in France are suing Total SA for not doing enough to reduce its carbon emissions.

Total’s current climate commitment:

  • 13% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025
  • “ambition” to reduce carbon intensity of energy sold to customers by 15%
  • investing $2 billion annually in low-carbon electricity

What the plaintiffs want:

Total to “align itself on a trajectory compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius”
