University Housing Homeless in Park

What is happening? UC Berkeley began a program to house the unsheltered of People’s Park. The Univeristy is partnering with the City of Berkeley and nonprofit collaborators to operate a converted motel and offer meals and social services

Why is this important? The program will allow the University to build needed student housing on part of the park land while maintaining 60% of the 2,8 acre park.  The city will pay the costs of the lease and nonprofit services for 12 months with a $4.7-million state grant. UC Berkeley has committed $2.2 million to cover the last six months.

How will this be important? UC Berkeley is encouraging other universities to do something similar.
