What is happening? Studies tell us that salary transparency with laws prohibiting companies from asking an applicant about their current or previous pay can narrow the pay gap.
Why is this important? Women and BIPOC persons most often receive low ball offers. Critics say pay transparency lowers men’s salaries and others say the laws encourage less hiring.

What is happening? Colorado may be the 1st state to grant its legislators parental leave. SB22-184 (2022 | CO) has no fiscal impact.
Why is this important? Colorado legislators describe their state as pioneering. IN 2020 a statewide initiative passed for medical and family leave in Colorado but did not apply to legislators.
How will this be important? It is said as Legislatures gain younger members and more women, these types of proposals will become more common. What is happening? A working paper from academics in France, Los Angeles, Canada and the Brookings Institute shows that women owned business were more adversely impacted by the pandemic with losses of more than 3% and closing for 17% longer.

What is happening? The NFL has the Rooney Rule, which may be seen as well intentioned, required the interviewing of candidates of color for open NFL positions. There’s now a lawsuit.
Why is this important? Other groups also followed suits with their own, potentially well intentioned rules, about interviewing diverse candidates. According to Harvard Business Review, there is statistically no chance of a diverse hire if only 1 person of color or 1 woman is interviews. However, statistics increase if people of color or women are interviewed for the same position.
How will this be important? The odds of a diverse hire didn’t increase a little if people of color or 2 women were hired- the odds went up like this: ” the odds of hiring a woman were 79.14 times greater, and the odds of hiring a person of color were 193.72 times greater.”

What is happening? Land O’Lakes, the dairy company, supports free, public Wi-Fi at 3,000 locations in 49 states, and funded the American Connection Corps that works with communities to bridge the digital divide.

What is happening? UC Berkeley began a program to house the unsheltered of People’s Park. The Univeristy is partnering with the City of Berkeley and nonprofit collaborators to operate a converted motel and offer meals and social services
Why is this important? The program will allow the University to build needed student housing on part of the park land while maintaining 60% of the 2,8 acre park. The city will pay the costs of the lease and nonprofit services for 12 months with a $4.7-million state grant. UC Berkeley has committed $2.2 million to cover the last six months.

What is happening? Economists with the University of Oregon say data shows that remote workers worked more weekend and after hours time than pre-pandemic.
Why is this important? The shift may signal slightly longer work weeks, but in reality it likely reflects using daylight hours for outdoor activities or errands, and shifting work to the evening.

What is happening? Portugal has a new law that prevents employers from contacting employees during their time off
Why is this important? The goal of the legislation is to protect the work life balance and improve the mental health of employees. Companies can be fined for violations and companies are prohibited from monitoring employees who are working from home.
How will this be important? We see the same in US headlines and business news. Work place cues are being set by employees. Under the new law in Portugal employees can work from home at anytime without notice. As I read over the break- employment isn’t about managing people it is about managing work product. Let people make their own responsible decisions.
What’s happening? In 2016 California passed SB 1383 (2016 | CA) that will require grocery stores to donate eligible foods to food rescue organizations and food banks.
Why is this important? The goal of the California legislation is to reduce methane emissions from landfills.
How will this be important? This is an excellent example of nonlinear solutions whereby donations to food banks are increased and emissions reduced.
